MIKE 21 and MIKE 3 implemented as software of choice at new Spanish R&D centre

MIKE Powered by DHI’s MIKE 21 and MIKE 3 have been chosen as the marine modelling software to be implemented at a new research and development (R&D) centre of The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Island (PLOCAN), Spain.

The state-of-the-art centre is a collaboration between PLOCAN and Red.es, a public corporate entity attached to Spain's Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. Co-financed with the European Union’s FEDER funds, the centre will focus on propagating the use of Information Technology and marine communications in Gran Canaria, using modern and specialised infrastructure for massive and parallel data processing.

The target of this infrastructure is to increase and strengthen the processing capacity of the centre using bi- and tri-dimensional marine and coastal models, as well as to incorporate software tools for 2D and 3D modelling of oceanographic data.

MIKE 21 and MIKE 3 will allow users of the centre to conduct a wide variety of studies, such as:

  • Studies of coastal and sea dynamics
  • Studies of the ecology of marine flora and fauna species
  • Analysis of the environmental impact of human activities
  • Studies of the operating conditions of new off-shore utilities
  • 2D and 3D modelling of the behaviour of different substances in the water – not only of natural origin such as mud and sand but also of human sources, for example, pollutants and discharges from submarine outlets
