Aqua Republica strikes a pose on the stage of IE Expo, Shanghai

Prominent universities in Shanghai participated in the Aqua Republica competition arranged by DHI and the German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste (DWA) at the IE Expo in Shanghai, 6-8 May 2015.

The interest for DHI’s serious game, Aqua Republica, continues to gain momentum with the latest collaboration between DHI and DWA. The collaboration aims to introduce Aqua Republica to university students at the IFAT conference series in Germany, Asia and Africa.

More than 40 students joined our serious game, which was arranged as a competition to present the most sustainable planning and management scheme for water resources, urban water and public water in general. The students were from Fudan University, Tongji University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Donghua University, East China University of Science and Technology, among other reputable universities in Shanghai.

DHI China’s senior engineers Zhang Nan, Zheng-Yu Yang and Xiong Lu represented DHI at the event. Rüdiger Heidebrecht, Head of Department, Training and International Cooperation, DWA, as well as professors from Tongji University and representatives from Wilo Pumps – the games sponsor – were also present.

Fudan University won the first prize. ‘The competition was very fierce indeed,’ says Zheng-Yu Yang. ‘Fudan University will now represent China in next year's race at IFAT 2016, which will be held in Munich in May 2016.’

‘These competitions are extremely important. As we activate the youth to take an active role and interest in water issues, we help to educate the next generation of water professionals.’

About the DHI-DWA collaboration
The collaboration between DHI and DWA started in March 2015 when DHI-WASY, together with DWA, organised a competition with Aqua Republica at the WASSER Berlin International Congress. At the congress, teams of international students competed to provide the best strategies to solve water balance problems in their own catchments.

A new DHI and DWA collaboration will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa from 15-18 September, 2015 in connection with the IFAT Forum, Africa.
